Discrimination in Singapore?

Is there discrimination practised in SIngapore? Either openly or among groups that you meet in school etc? What type of discrimination is most common? Age, sex, race, religion etc? What in the first place is discrimination? Can you spot it anywhere else in the rest of the world?

Discrimination. Ah yes, a sensitive topic yet to be touched on. Well, first & formost i shall sincerly apologise for what i'm goin to be saying here, lest it gets too on the "unpleasant" side, No offence to anyone seriously..

"Is discrimination practiced in Singapore?" Well, from what i observed it is practised not openly but rather among small groups & clicks. It is rather rare that you hear one loudly discriminating against someone in the public, but i shant say its not heard..

The main types of discrimination in singapore as what i feel to be are the age & race. Once again, this is not something practiced openly, as in singapore's education context the importance of racial harmony was instilled in us.

Racial discrimination is more or less "common" i would say. It is common especially in schools u find people of the same race clicking together as it somehow allowed them to find comfort.Hence, as a group it does occur to them to comment on the others differing from their click. Oftenly, these comments are merely passing remarks and not from the heart as everyone from all races are widely accepted in singapore.

As for age discrimination, i do find it a problem widely seen around the island. It do seemed that the youths and the senior citizens doesnt really click along. Often on the mrt, as i noticed youths would usually give the elderly that sit beside them that strange look especially those with smells and antics. The same goes for the elderly towards the youths, commenting loudly on their appearance, etc.

Discrimination is defined as the treatment of a particular group in society in an unfair way.In singapore, discrimination is not seen from the outer surface, but more on individual clicks, etc.
However, on the global context it is a controversial issue in countries such as sri lanka, europe whereby tensions can run pretty high.

To sum up, the topic of discrimination is something unavoidable in worldwide nations, just that whether it is practiced openly or between small clicks.

Yes i have to agree that Discrimination is a sensitive topic. There are many forms of discrimination in the world, such as race, age, gender and languege. What i am going to comment later, i do hope that i did not offend anyone.

Singapore is well-known to be a multi-racial country, racial discrimination has yet to be as serious as to becoming of a civil war, as our first class government has been "drilling" the importance of racial harmony as young as primary school. But i cannot deny the fact that there is still a handful of clique in singapore that is still discriminating other race.

A very good example will be Christmas party at orchard road every year. Never fail, the Newspaper will have article about the party with foreign worker that molest local female in the crowded place. In the crowded street in orchard road, especially with festive party, its almost impossible for anyone not to touch any1 else.

Discrimination is unaviodable, but it can be prevented

Discrimination. The discrimination i see in singapore are towards age and also, religion.

From time to time, we would be able to see people of different aged group to be around and about in groups. It's just more realistic that they stick that way as it benefits them socially and often, they share common interests. Many youngsters, are seen discriminating the older as they feel that they are the future and the the old are the past, through the way they look at them.

Discrimination in religion. We can see there are people in public areas out to preach others and convert their religion. It actually comes to me as quite offending as why are they out to change the beliefs of others? Everyone has their equal freedom to believe in what they wish to believe. Other than this case, there are religions that require conversion when it comes to marriage which actually sets a barrier between the strong religionists.

Everyone has their differences and are sure to have something that they dislike. It's hard to satisfy everyone in the society, but as long as the majority of us are working towards this goal of religious harmony, we will be safe from whatever threats that may come from them.

We, Singaporeans who are living in a multi-racial country, learn to live with each other harmoniously..
however, discrimination is still spotted here.

People tend to discriminate other ppl by their personality when they find out that
they are surrounded by ppl that they despise.

They tend to discriminate them and not work together, this may not be practised openly...
but it is still common amongst ppl, esp. young ppl

This subverbs the fact that the country wants the people to be united.

This issue is also commonly faced by other ppl in the world, even though people should accept each other..
despite their differences

On my opinion, I think we should accept people for who they are and who they are not, regardless age, sex, race and religion.

Singapore is a multi-racial country with many ethnic groups. Our vast variety of cultures is what makes us so unique.Hence we must work together to preserve racial harmony.

How often do you see people of different races mixing together?People tend to mix with people whom they feel more comfortable with. This scenario is not only seen in Singapore but also in other parts of the world.I believe that deep inside everyone's heart is a little racist.

As for religion discrimination, there are certain religions who go all out to converting others in the name of saving them from the devil etc. For me, I feel that all religions are the same. There is no right and wrong to their beliefs. As long as they teach one to be morally upright, what is the point of proving whose religion is more "correct".

Discrimination is unavoidable but we must try to tolerate each other.

Singapore is a small island with different races of people living together. The government had done a good job by bonding the different races together. Celebrating racial harmony day is not just for fun. It is to reward us able to work in peace. This is also, an opportunity for us to know more about the different races.

I believe that there is definitely a little discrimination in everyone heart. All of us wants to mix with companies that you are comfortable with. But a little tolerance can keep peace and harmony. So we should all play a part to keep Singapore a peaceful country.

I think discrimination is commonly practice in Singapore. I guess almost all Singaporean love to call the construction working as “BANGALA “. It’s so commonly that nowadays even primary kids are calling them that. Some of the secondary school students can even crack jokes about their skin colour.
I think why Singaporean discriminate them is because their body smell is SUPER strong. Whenever they step into the mrt, u could smell it from far. I guess whenever there’s people dislike some thing would lead to discrimination.
Discrimination starts from primary school age students of any religion. It’s so common in Singapore that it happen anywhere. It can even be in CCA, if the CCA almost all Malay students, they will discrimination the race. Discrimination usually started with a small group and end up in a big group.
For example, in Singapore Polytechnic dragon boat team, we always discriminate this guy name ‘Jason’ even through he same race as us. The reason is because he ask stupid question like “U going toilet right?” when we are already in the toilet. And he loves to stretch his muscle so much that in a minute he can stretch 4 times! How many times he stretch everyday?
To conclude, discrimination happen any place whenever there is dislike in certain things by a group. Even mature adults do that.

Discrimination... ITs a very sensitive topic... ppl might say there isnt.. but the fact stays.. there is discrimination in singapore. it happens everywhere.Just that it happens in a way where it doesnt appear seem rong. The most common example is in the workforce itself... when job interviews are being conducted at times certain speaking languages are demanded. but then who can blame them they have a business to run and they need those certain person.. even in school discrimination can be found for example certains cliques will be formed with respect to race age religion.... but nobody can blame them. mans nature is to be with ppl who u are comfartable with.. but in singapore this discrimination doesnt affect lifes in a huge extent for example there are so many activities like soccer which we can see ppl from many race religion age come together to enjoy. also we can see discrimination from the many events that happened throughout history itself.. one very famous and extreme case of discrimination in the case of the holocaust where in germany the jews basically were killed just because there were jews. so we can say that discrimination will always exist in the world as long as man prefers comfort but it can be prevented from blowing up as long as long as small adjusments are made to each person life.
